Children Society | Character Design

Father and son

I really love to design characters in curvy and round shapes.

After the tutorial with Kevin, I learned that it would be more convincing to build up the environment and consider the camera’s angle.

Therefore I designed some super simple the map (or stage) for the project.
I try to make things easy and straightforward. Everything happens on a horizontal line! XD

The Children Society | Inspiration

My assigned audio track is about the boy’s daily happenings which gives me a clear vision of the environment and his feelings.

From the part of dragging his father home, I can imagine the weight of his father, which also means how the parents behave.

My idea is,

Weight is an invisible but sensible force,
which affects us both physically and mentally.

The weight of parents in children’s life is neither stress nor
pressure put on their shoulders.
But a sense of security which is made of love and protection.

I am going to visualise the happening, and focus on character’s facial expression and the weight of objects. I’m going to make things neutral not blaming anyone.

This is what came to my mind instantly hearing the audio track.

However, I am a bit concerned that it may look too negative and sad that I tried to colour it with the brand colours.

And here is the outcome.

I am still exploring to decide the final style and colouring…

Because at the end he says he doesn’t want to see it. I can tell he is quite mature and seeking for solution to change the conditions. That’s quite optimistic to me.

POCARI SWEAT TVC & Behind the scene

POCARI SWEAT is a Japanese sports drink which is well known in Hong Kong. They have been producing humanise TV commercials for years.

Most of their productions were casted high school students and teenagers, which I found very much matching their brand image, sportive, energetic  and positive.

Recently, I saw their latest TVC on social media which was very inspiring and encouraging.

I am amazed with the team work done by the large group of students.

These have been their slogans for years, which means “Myself is surely beyond imagination/ expectation. Just release the potential.”

I really like how Japanese understands and interprets humanity.
They see every subject in a natural yet sentimental way.

I have been struggling about not being experimental enough as an artist.
But after watching this video, I am sure that everyone has their own notion in creation. At the moment, I want to be realistic in conveying human emotions.

I also want to explore if my animation can do what is done here.

I really love the idea of team work.

This video was found randomly on youtube.
I was looking for something to listen while drawing for the Children Society project.
I really like the casualness of their animation as I’ve found it’s really hard for me to create works that flow freely.

I tend to make things tidy and in order XD (a slight symptom of OCD haha)
But I will try to explore and imitate works like this to see if I could get new inspiration. 🙂
